For years, Nova Scotia stood out as one of the few jurisdictions in Canada where applying for a provincial nomination did not cost a single cent in provincial processing fees. That era is officially coming to an end.

Starting September 1, 2026, Nova Scotia is introducing a mandatory, non-refundable application fee for the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP). Any candidate selected from the Expression of Interest (EOI) pool under the worker streams—including Nova Scotia Skilled Worker, Nova Scotia Graduate, and Nova Scotia Express Entry—will now be required to pay a $1,000 provincial processing fee to submit their nomination application. For Entrepreneur streams, the fee will be $2,000.

This change brings Nova Scotia in line with provinces like Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta, but it fundamentally shifts the strategy and financial planning required by candidates waiting in the pool.

What Changes and What Stays Free?

Submitting and maintaining your Expression of Interest (EOI) profile in the Nova Scotia candidate pool remains 100% free. You do not pay anything to throw your hat in the ring, nor can you pre-pay to speed up your chances.

The fee is only triggered once your profile is officially selected and you receive an invitation to apply for provincial assessment. However, this is where the real pressure begins: candidates selected under worker streams will have only seven calendar days from the date of selection to pay the $1,000 fee and submit their complete application.

If you fail to submit payment and complete your application within that tight 7-day window, your file will be closed immediately, and your chance will vanish.

Key Details You Need to Plan For

  • Per Principal Applicant: The $1,000 worker fee is a flat charge per principal applicant. It does not increase if you include an accompanying spouse or dependent children on your nomination application.
  • Single Online Payment: Payment must be completed in a single online transaction using a major credit card. Installments or split payments across multiple cards are not accepted.
  • Non-Refundable: Once paid, the fee is non-refundable, regardless of whether your nomination is approved or refused.
  • The AIP Alternative: The Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) remains completely exempt from provincial application fees, continuing to operate without extra provincial charges across the Atlantic region.

The Strategic Takeaway

Introducing an application fee is designed to eliminate speculative profiles, fund assessment capacity, and ensure that only serious, fully prepared candidates take up limited nomination spaces.

With a strict 7-day clock ticking the moment you are drawn, you cannot afford to scramble for paperwork, bank statements, or employer forms after receiving an invite. Your documentation must be bulletproof and sitting on your desk before your name is pulled.

If you are waiting in the Nova Scotia pool, budget for this $1,000 fee now, audit your supporting evidence, and make sure your file is completely ready to submit the second your notification arrives.
